After nine months of chipping away at it, my first album Swatchbook is finally done. Honored to be sharing it. The project came about from an unusual premise: to see if I could make a full electronic album using only my iPhone, and nothing else.

Aside from utilizing a small, hand-picked sample library and doing the final mixdowns and mastering in proper studios, all of the sound design, sequencing and arranging on Swatchbook were done on the phone (a 4-year-old one at that) with a MIDI-based app called Caustic.

Essentially a mobile version of Propellerhead Reason, Caustic felt more natural to me workflow-wise than any other mobile music app. A lot of my “AHA” moments in music come when I’m not at home, so it finally became easy for me to bring some of the ideas I had in my head using Caustic while in subways, train stations, coffee shops, the office, hotels, park benches, wherever, to life.

Beyond my typical lo-fi, techno and house tomfoolery I used the longer format to dip my head into some styles I’m less familiar with. There’s a couple downtempo tracks, a minimal drum and bass piece at the end, even an electronic 12-bar-blues bit. I didn’t want to just, you know….phone it in. (I'll get my coat)
